Gynaecological applications using the da Vinci® robot

Robot-assisted surgery represents the next stage of evolution for gynaecology, bringing together the advantages of open and minimally invasive surgery.

While conventional minimally invasive surgery is very effective and highly recommended for many routine procedures, the rigid, long-handled instruments used are not generally suitable for more difficult or complex operations. It is in these kinds of operations that the advantages of robot-assisted surgery really come to the fore, delivering major benefits for both patient and surgeon.

In the gynaecological field, such interventions include hysterectomy for non-cancerous conditions, fibroid removal and treatment of endometriosis (a non-cancerous disorder of the lining of the womb).

A further important area of use for da Vinci surgery is minimally invasive treatment of cancers of the female reproductive system. These include a range of cancers of the uterus (womb), vagina, ovaries and fallopian tubes.
